Plan around opening, not assumptions

Barcelona on Monday: museums, opening hours and 2 day plans

Barcelona does not shut down on Monday. Some major museums close while others open. Compare seven official schedules and choose one main visit with a practical day plan around it.

Official opening information checked on 30 October 2026

Quick answer: check your particular Monday

On an ordinary Monday, Picasso, MNAC and Fundació Joan Miró are not reliable museum choices. MACBA, the Maritime Museum, Sagrada Família and Sant Pau publish Monday hours. Check bookable slots and date exceptions separately; “normally open” does not mean tickets remain for your preferred time.

What opens on Monday in Barcelona?

This overview covers the galleries or named visit, rather than separate cafés, shops or outdoor spaces. Use the official source beside each row for your own visit date.

Closed every Monday.

Two practical Monday plans

These are editorial planning suggestions, not organised tours. Choose one plan and align its start with your actual reservation. The blocks leave room for breaks; they are not guaranteed visit or walking times.

Plan 1 · Modernisme in one part of Eixample

For a first visit or an interest in architecture. Choose Sagrada Família or Sant Pau as your main visit.

  1. Around 10 am · one reserved interior

Start at your chosen building using your actual booked time. Leave a generous morning block in your own plan; this does not promise available slots or a fixed visit duration.

  2. Late morning · Avinguda de Gaudí

Connect the basilica area with Sant Pau along Avinguda de Gaudí. View the other building from outside and leave time for photos and a break. An exterior stop does not grant interior admission.

  3. From 1 pm · lunch and an unhurried afternoon

Have lunch in the same area. Leave the afternoon for a relaxed walk or your own interests. Add a second interior only if you want to allocate the extra time and budget.

Plan 2 · one museum and the old town

For art or history without building Monday around a closed museum. Choose MACBA or the Maritime Museum.

  1. 11 am · start at your chosen museum

MACBA suits contemporary art and sits on Plaça dels Àngels. The Maritime Museum is near Drassanes and suits an interest in ships. An 11 am start falls within both regular Monday schedules; check your date and chosen exhibition.

  2. Around 1 pm · lunch nearby

After MACBA, stay in El Raval or towards Sant Antoni. After the Maritime Museum, stay near Drassanes or the edge of the Gothic Quarter. This avoids crossing the city just for lunch.

  3. From 2.30 pm · an outdoor walk at your own pace

Choose Gothic Quarter streets and squares, perhaps finishing at Port Vell. Save Picasso’s galleries for another day. In rain, shorten the outdoor part; the route is not a fully covered alternative.

Arrange your main visit and time slot first

A public-holiday Monday is not a universal exception

MNAC explicitly says it closes on Mondays except public holidays. Picasso specifies every Monday of the year. Fundació Joan Miró publishes individual exception dates. Do not apply one museum’s rule across the whole city.

For your Christmas planning: Fundació Joan Miró lists Monday 28 December 2026 as an opening exception. Check the bookable visit for that specific date. This does not establish that Picasso or MNAC will open.

Keep Monday simple

  • Check which parts of a museum combination open on Monday before buying. A pass does not override a closing day.
  • Save Picasso or MNAC for another day unless your Monday has a confirmed exception.
  • With children, plan around their ages and the chosen product. Use our Gaudí child-ticket checker and choose a shorter indoor plan in rain.

Questions about Barcelona on Monday

Are all Barcelona museums closed on Monday?

No. MACBA and the Maritime Museum publish Monday hours. The Picasso Museum closes every Monday. MNAC and Fundació Joan Miró have their own exceptions. Check the individual museum rather than applying one city-wide rule.

Does the Picasso Museum open on public-holiday Mondays?

The official visitor page lists every Monday of the year as closed. Do not rely on a general claim that museums open on public holidays. For any special announcement, check the museum’s own calendar.

Can I visit MNAC on Monday?

MNAC closes on ordinary Mondays. It makes an exception for public holidays, publishing hours of 10 am–3 pm. Check annual closures on 1 January, 1 May and 25 December and any changes separately.

Does Fundació Joan Miró close every Monday?

Monday is its regular closing day, but the calendar lists individual exceptions. At review, these include 28 December 2026. This does not establish that every public-holiday Monday is open.

What can I do on a rainy Monday?

Choose MACBA for contemporary art or the Maritime Museum for ships and maritime history. Keep to one museum and lunch nearby. The walking parts of the day plans are outdoors; omit or shorten them in bad weather.

Should I book Sagrada Família or Sant Pau ahead for Monday?

Settle your chosen visit and arrival time before arranging the rest of the day. Published Monday hours do not establish that your preferred slot is available. Compare official admission and a partner product for the same date, ages and inclusions.
