What fits your family?
Our advice: start with what your child enjoys. A toddler mainly needs a short programme and an easy break; school-age children may spend longer exploring; let teenagers choose one theme themselves. The age advice here is editorial guidance, not admission restrictions.
| Choose this if… | Main activity | Plan and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Your child wants to explore and ask questions | CosmoCaixa | Our first choice for a science afternoon with school-age children. Set aside one generous visit block; it is outside the old town. |
| Your family mainly wants fish and the Oceanarium | L’Aquàrium · Port Vell | A visual choice, including with younger children. Compare the complete family price; the approach across the harbour is outdoors. |
| Your children enjoy ships and stories | Museu Marítim | A relaxed programme near Drassanes. The operator lists free museum admission on Sundays after 3 pm. |
The programmes below are our planning suggestions. Times are visit blocks with a buffer, not promises about queues or transport schedules. Choose one programme rather than combining all three.
Plan 1: a science half-day at CosmoCaixa
Choose this if your family enjoys observing, comparing and asking questions. The Bosque Inundado recreates an Amazonian ecosystem inside the museum. At review, the Tiburones exhibition is also scheduled from 22 October 2026 to 26 September 2027; check the programme for your date.
10 am–1 pm: museum time with room to choose
Treat this as a generous half-day: let each child choose a topic and spend time where interest holds. You do not need to complete every floor. Start with a shorter visit for young children.
Afterwards: lunch and an open afternoon
Keep the afternoon open or return to your accommodation. Avoid squeezing CosmoCaixa between two old-town time slots: it is at Carrer d’Isaac Newton 26. Check your public-transport route and the final approach, especially with a pushchair.
For young children, check separate family activities. These have their own ages, languages and bookings; standard museum admission does not automatically include a workshop or planetarium. Example baby activity and conditions ↗ · Bosque Inundado ↗

Plan 2: the aquarium as your main Port Vell activity
Choose this if your family wants to see the animals and Oceanarium. The official FAQ recommends at least two hours. That is a visit guideline rather than a reason to keep a tired child inside longer.
10 am–12:30 pm: an unhurried visit block
Choose a suitable entry slot and allow an arrival buffer. The aquarium is on Moll d’Espanya in Port Vell; the approach is not entirely covered. Bring rainwear and keep the harbour walk practical rather than adding more sightseeing.
After the visit: lunch, then reassess
Have lunch, then decide whether a short follow-up would be enjoyable. In persistent rain, returning to the hotel is a reasonable finish. Avoid automatically adding a second paid museum.

Plan 3: ships and a relaxed pace at the Maritime Museum
Our alternative for children interested in ships and history. Turn it into an observation challenge: let each child choose one detail and explain what it might mean. This gives the visit a focus without reading every label.
A museum block of around two hours
For example, start at 10 am and eat afterwards around Drassanes. On Sunday, reverse the plan: lunch first, then the free museum period from 3 pm. Two hours is our planning allowance, not an official visit duration.
Regular museum hours are 10 am–8 pm, with last admission at 7 pm. Around the holidays, it closes on 25 and 26 December and 1 and 6 January; on 24 and 31 December it closes at 3 pm. Do not assume a ship visit outside the museum is available or included in this rainy-day plan. Opening, free Sundays and ticket information ↗
What does it cost a family? Two worked examples
These are official price references checked on 29 October 2026, not live quotes. Transport, food and separately booked activities are extra.
CosmoCaixa
Two adults and children aged 6 and 9: 2 × €8 + 2 × €0 = €16 for standard museum admission. Under-16s are free, but reserve their tickets too.
Official museum tickets ↗L’Aquàrium
For the same ages, individual official day tickets cost 2 × €30 + 2 × €23 = €106. The price page also lists a €88 Family Pack 2+2; check ages and conditions before choosing a pack.
Official fares and packs ↗At the aquarium, the general rate starts at age 11; ages 5–10 and 3–4 have separate rates, and ages 0–2 are free. Compare identical ages and inclusions with a partner.

Aquarium admission through GetYourGuide
This selected product lists admission to L’Aquàrium de Barcelona and the Oceanarium. It is not a transport ticket or multi-attraction pass. Treat extra experiences as separate products unless your option explicitly includes them.
At review, free cancellation up to 24 hours in advance is listed. Check the date, selected entry time, every child’s age, final total and current conditions.
View this option on GetYourGuide ↗Compare the final price for the same date, party and inclusions with the official website. Prices and availability are checked by the provider when you open its page. A ticket valid for one day still requires the booked entry time.

What should you arrange before setting out?
- Choose one main activity and check opening for your date. Public holidays can be exceptions.
- Enter actual child ages, bring any required evidence and check free tickets too.
- Read the selected product’s cancellation policy; a flexible itinerary is different from a refundable ticket.
- Check the journey right to the door. An indoor attraction does not automatically have a dry approach from the metro.
Would older children prefer Gaudí? Choose one house and compare the interior, rooftop and ticket inclusions first. Use a museum day to replace your outdoor programme rather than adding it on top. Choose Casa Batlló or Casa Milà →

Questions about Barcelona with kids in the rain
What is our first choice for a rainy day with kids?
For curious school-age children: CosmoCaixa. For a family mainly interested in fish: the aquarium. Choose the Maritime Museum for an interest in ships. These are recommendations, not a guarantee that every age will enjoy the same activity.
What can you do with a toddler?
Choose one shorter visit and leave room for naps and meals. The aquarium may suit a child interested in animals. At CosmoCaixa, check current baby and toddler activities, including age, language, date and the separate booking.
Is CosmoCaixa free for children?
Standard museum admission is free for under-16s, but an admission ticket is still required. Separately booked activities can cost extra, so include children in your reservation.
Can you return to the aquarium after lunch?
The official FAQ says re-entry is not allowed after leaving. Plan your meal before or after the visit, or use the facilities inside before departing.
What is a free alternative on Sunday?
The Maritime Museum lists free museum admission on Sundays after 3 pm. Check current opening and exceptions; this does not mean other museums or activities are free then.
Should you pre-book every attraction when rain is forecast?
Book one suitable main activity and check change and cancellation conditions. Leave the rest of the day open. A booked outdoor activity does not automatically become exchangeable because it rains.
