A terminal desk or a shuttle first?
For a short trip, a late landing or a lot of luggage, a desk at your arrival terminal can be convenient. An off-airport office can also work well if you allow for the shuttle in both directions. Compare the total rental price alongside the journey from the arrivals hall to the car.
Terminal desk
Go to the rental desk, then to the designated parking area. Check whether your reservation is for T1 or T2; the airport name alone is not enough.
Off-airport office with a shuttle
Find the company’s shuttle stop first. Allow for waiting, the ride to the office and the collection process there. Weigh any saving against these extra steps.
How pickup differs between suppliers
This selection compares collection arrangements, rather than ranking service quality or customer experiences. Your chosen offer and confirmation determine where to go. A supplier listed here may not be available through Expedia for your dates.

|---|---|---|---|
| Avis ↗ | Terminal desk | T1 / T2B | Use the branch named on your confirmation. |

From the arrivals hall to your car
Arriving at Terminal 1
Aena lists most of the terminal desks above in the arrivals hall on T1’s first floor. Follow Car rental / Alquiler de coches signs and read your branch’s instructions. At the desk, confirm where to find the vehicle.
Arriving at Terminal 2
Aena lists the T2 terminal desks above in T2B’s arrivals area on floor 0. Check whether your flight arrives at section A, B or C so you can follow the right route to the agreed desk or shuttle stop.
If your rental office is off-airport
Nizacars uses a shuttle from T1 and T2, quoting approximately 10–15 minutes between services. Follow its official pickup instructions ↗.
Centauro also uses an off-airport office. Its directions distinguish T1, T2A/B and T2C; at T1 it describes a yellow courtesy minibus approximately every 15–20 minutes. Before departure, open its official pickup and return directions ↗.
Six checks before choosing the lowest price
The actual pickup branch
Look for the street address, terminal and collection method. An airport label on a comparison site does not tell you whether you will need a shuttle.
Opening times and your flight
Allow time for passport control where relevant, baggage and reaching the desk. Confirm what happens if your flight is delayed and you arrive after the agreed collection time.
Documents and payment card
Read the offer’s requirements for the driver’s licence, identification, cardholder, card type and available credit. Do not assume a debit card or a phone wallet will be accepted for the deposit.
Deposit and protection
Check the amount blocked on your card, the excess and exclusions. If protection is sold by an intermediary, check who handles a claim and whether the rental company still requires a deposit.
The full price
Compare equivalent cars and include luggage space, an additional driver, child seats, fuel, mileage and any out-of-hours charges. A low daily headline price is only the starting point.
Return arrangements
Check the return address, permitted time and instructions for an unattended return. With a shuttle office, include the trip back to your departure terminal.
For example, Nizacars specifies a physical credit card for the deposit in its FAQ. Check payment requirements for each supplier and rate, even if you have already paid for the booking online. Read Nizacars’ requirements ↗.
Landing late? Confirm the pickup arrangements
Choose a collection time based on when you can actually reach the supplier. Landing time is only one part of that calculation. Ask which number to call if delayed and whether your flight number is attached to the reservation.
SIXT’s T2 page asks for a valid flight number or arrival terminal. Its instructions say the reserved car will be at T1 if no valid flight number is provided, and direct passengers to T1 outside T2 branch hours. Check the arrangement for your booking. SIXT branch information ↗.
Nizacars lists regular office hours of 07:00–23:00; collection between 23:00 and 01:00 is subject to advance confirmation, availability and additional charges. Out-of-hours returns do not automatically mean collection is available at the same times.
Plan your return around the departure terminal
Save the agreed return address in advance. Directions to the departures hall may take a different exit from the route to Car return. At the airport, follow the car-rental signs and then your supplier’s signs, using the return instructions in your confirmation.
- Photograph the car’s condition, mileage and fuel level, and keep your refuelling receipt.
- At a staffed return, ask for a handover record. For key-drop returns, follow the agreed procedure carefully.
- At an off-airport office, allow for the vehicle check, unloading, waiting for the shuttle and travelling to your departure terminal.
- Work backwards from the airport arrival time requested by your airline and leave a margin for traffic and queues.
There is no single collection or return allowance that suits every flight and supplier. A saving on the rental price is less useful if it leaves too little time before your flight home.
Visiting Barcelona first? Consider collecting later
If your trip starts with a few nights in the centre, compare airport collection with hiring a car when your onward trip begins. Include overnight parking, unfamiliar city driving and the walk from the garage to your hotel. A beach stay or regional road trip may lead to a different choice.

Barcelona Airport car-hire questions
Are all Barcelona Airport rental cars collected inside the terminal?
No. Some suppliers have terminal desks; others use a shuttle to an off-airport office. Read the exact pickup address and instructions before choosing an offer.
Can I collect at T1 and return at T2?
Only use the return arrangement agreed in your booking. Check it with the rental company before changing terminals or leaving the vehicle at another branch.
Is the airport terminal bus the same as a rental-company shuttle?
No. Aena’s free bus connects T1 and T2. An off-airport rental shuttle takes customers to that company’s office. Follow the instructions for the correct service.
Can I collect a car after midnight?
It depends on the branch, date and confirmed reservation. Check pickup hours separately from key-drop hours and obtain confirmation for a late arrival.
Does a terminal desk guarantee faster collection?
No. It removes the off-airport shuttle leg, but you may still face a queue, paperwork and a walk to the vehicle. Choose based on your arrival circumstances and the complete offer.
